We cross the Drake Passage to reach Antarctica from Argentina. It is
famously rough seas because it is where the Atlantic and Pacific meet
and it is a constrained area that heightens the winds that circle
Antarctica. It takes two days to cross and this is our second day.
The seas pitch around in chaotic ways, this is not like a gentle swell.
The ship does not pitch that much, but it does it suddenly and
unpredictably. Just when you think you've got the rhythm of the swaying
it throws in an odd one that causes you to lose your balance. It becomes
an effort to walk around and even to sit. The easiest thing is to lie
quietly.
Anything in the cabin that is not constrained will slide around. Every
can seem stable and then a big wave hits and things go tumbling, closet
doors open and bang shut, drawers fall out.
While we've been at sea they have presented lectures on birds, penguins,
glaciers, etc. And we got a long briefing on the rules while on
Antarctica. They are very worried about foreign species so they check
everything we will wear, especially the vecro, for seeds, dirt, or
anything else that could contaminate.
Tomorrow we reach the Antarctic peninsula.
